Damien Flood - Performing

Damien Floodwho am i

Music has always played an integral part of my life. When I was younger I had another passion – football. My dad was a footballer from Ireland, which I suppose makes my mum a WAG but “it was a lot different back then!” They fell in love and I was the first of three kids, two boys and a girl. My mum didn’t fancy me following in my Dad’s footsteps so she sent me to piano and singing lessons from a very early age as I showed so much interest and promise in music.

My first proper job, at the age of 11, was performing in “The Sound of Music” and thus my love affair with the entertainment industry started and I continued working from there on in.

I followed music right through to university gaining a BA Hons in Performing Arts, which sounds very impressive but I soon realised it was no use waving a certificate at a stadium or a room full of people and to expect to keep their attention. So, I set out to gain experience through various musically driven tours around Europe and the UK.

I was then entered into a modelling competition by my drunk flatmates and to their (and my!) disbelief I won the “GQ Face of 95” competition which awarded me a modelling contract, so I then dabbled in the world of modelling doing catwalk shows - hilarious! I found it frustrating walking up and down and not really doing anything so decided to re-focus back on my music.

Shortly after this, I was fortunate enough to be signed by Immediate Records and supported Boyzone on their arena tour in 1996 where I basically flirted with being a popstar for a bit. It was a fantastic experience, so with that and Stanislavski’s method acting books I proceeded to land the role of ‘Sean’ the band lead singer in…wait for it… “Boyband The Musical” at London’s Gielgud Theatre.

Having had a taste of theatre, I then decided to take on a more challenging role, which came in the form of “Roger” in the Tony Award winning musical “Rent”, again performing in London’s West End. “Rent” was an amazing experience, but it made me realise that maybe I wasn’t cut out for the traditional show in the West End so I went back to music.

I bought a studio and recorded my own music. Via this route I became a session singer and backing vocalist. I’m currently in Tom Jones’s UK band with recent TV appearances including BBC’s “Strictly Come Dancing”, “Friday Night With Jonathan Ross” and “The Graham Norton Show” to name but a few.

I have worked with various function and session bands, but always felt there was something missing…a hip-ness, cool-ness, a soul.

So, I began to develop my piano and vocal skills and gained several residencies at London venues such as The Living Room, Ruby Blue and The Players Bar. I also have a fantastic group of musicians I work with in my band and we play the London circuit venues such as Ronnie Scotts, 606 Club, The Pigalle, Café du Paris and The O2’s Indigo2 as well as playing at private and corporate events.

When I’m at home I listen endlessly to anything from Coltrane to The Police, often indulging in a spot of wine tasting plus cheese and biscuits. I love sports; football is in the genes (dad) and tennis (mum) so I’m not in bad nick.  And I love boats! Give me a yacht in the Med any day! I travel to my various gigs via the Thames River Taxi a boat on the Thames; it makes me feel like I’m in a movie. Sad I know, but it’s the little things!

Lastly, the love of my life and my inspiration is my gorgeous 4 year old daughter Scarlett.
